Language models now craft responses so polished, you’d be hard-pressed to tell them from a real therapist. Sometimes, they even sound more professional and on-point than a human could. But here’s the catch: these metrics don’t measure real support—they measure attention. Time spent in an app, message counts, session depth—these are all about how well the system keeps you hooked, not whether your life is actually changing outside the chat window. If we judged real therapists by these standards, the “best” would be the one whose clients never leave. In real life, that’s obviously absurd. Yet in tech-driven emotional support, it’s become the norm. The real problem? We’ve confused the form of psychological help with its substance, assuming that the right words at the right time are all that matter. But true support and therapy have never been just about saying the right thing.

Support as a Service vs. Support as a Human Encounter

Many people imagine therapy as a simple exchange: a person with a problem, a specialist with the perfect words, and instant relief. If that’s all it takes, automating the process seems obvious. Just train a model on counseling textbooks, add a dash of empathy, and you’re set. But real help doesn’t work that way. There’s a kind of support that can be turned into a service—predictable, safe, focused on calming anxiety or stabilizing someone in a stressful moment. Here, AI can be genuinely useful: always available, never tired, ready with breathing exercises and basic coping tips. But there’s another level—the one that makes therapy transformative. At this level, support is a meeting between two people, not a transaction. Both step into uncertainty, with no guaranteed outcome. The goal isn’t just to feel better, but to become different. That takes more than perfect phrasing; it takes a willingness to change together. When we try to automate this, we end up with a simulation, not the real thing.

Love, Surrogates, and the Limits of Simulation

Believing therapy is just about exchanging the right phrases is like thinking love is just a string of compliments or texts. We know real love is what happens between the words—the silences that aren’t awkward, the risk of saying the wrong thing, the honest disagreements. Love grows not from avoiding conflict, but from working through it. Now imagine a partner who only exists in text, always agrees with you, never gets tired, never has their own opinion. That’s not an ideal relationship—it’s a dystopian nightmare. Real closeness is born from risk: the chance of being misunderstood, the need to negotiate, the challenge of someone else’s difference. That’s what pushes us to grow. An AI bot is the perfect, and therefore utterly useless, partner—always on your side, never challenging, never truly present. Its acceptance is algorithmic, not personal. Without tension or misunderstanding, any conversation becomes hollow. Therapy works much like love. Yes, words matter, but what changes a client is the relationship—the trust that comes from honesty, the therapist’s ability to sit with your pain, the moments when they respond as a real person, not a script. AI can simulate conversation, but it can’t create that in-between space. It can’t risk, can’t be changed by you, and so you can’t truly change in dialogue with it. You get an endless stream of “right words,” but none of the living, risky, mutual presence that makes therapy work.

Three Human Qualities AI Can’t Imitate

1. Mutual vulnerability and risk. In real helping relationships, both people take risks. The therapist can make mistakes, be misunderstood, or feel emotionally drained. Their reactions are valuable material for the work. AI risks nothing—its “empathy” is just calculated probability. Without risk, there’s no real trust, and without trust, words are empty.

2. A life and boundaries of their own. Real therapists get tired. They have bad days. Their attention is limited. This isn’t a flaw—it teaches us to respect others’ boundaries and value their time. AI’s endless patience and 24/7 availability rob us of this crucial lesson.

3. Shared, unpredictable growth. In therapy, both client and therapist change. It’s a journey without a map. AI can’t “become” in a human sense. It doesn’t carry the emotional echoes of past sessions. True transformation happens between two becoming people, not between a person and a static tool.

The Dead End of Human-Free Design

Modern mental health platforms are built to maximize engagement and minimize risk—legal, reputational, emotional. The result is a bubble: a language model wrapped in filters and escalation scripts, great at calming emotions and returning users to a manageable state. It can offer breathing techniques and nonjudgmental acceptance, but it fails when faced with deep grief, rage, emptiness, or existential despair. In those moments, AI isn’t just useless—it can be dangerous, smoothing over what needs to be endured. And ironically, the most “successful” products are often those that best create the illusion of change, while deepening dependence on the interface. Users come back not because they’re more resilient, but because they’ve learned to seek relief only through the system.

Rethinking the Role: AI as Guide, Not Destination

The answer isn’t to make bots more human or their words more perfect. It’s to stop seeing AI as a standalone helper and start using it as a fundamentally different tool. That means shifting from “answer generator” to “context analyst”—AI can help spot patterns, track changes, and clarify feelings, preparing people for real conversations instead of replacing them. Systems should be designed to break the endless chat loop, nudging users to share discoveries with real people or professionals. AI must be honest about its limits: “I’m a tool to help you reflect, not a source of solutions. I can’t be with you in real pain.” Success should be measured not by chat time, but by how often people leave the app for real life, how well they can describe their state, and how much easier it is to reach out to others.

From Simulation to Real Support

The current path for AI in mental health is all about perfecting the simulation. It’s impressive tech, but humanly shallow and ethically questionable, exploiting our need for connection without delivering it. A better way is humbler: AI as navigator, not destination. It helps you prepare for tough talks, process pain, and ask yourself hard questions. But the real act of support—the meeting with another living, vulnerable, risk-taking person—can only happen between humans. The real challenge for designers isn’t replacing therapists with algorithms, but building tech that helps people overcome isolation and fear, leading them to genuine human encounters. That means creating open systems that point users back to their own lives and relationships. If AI has a place here, it’s as the one who helps you not stay alone with your screen when what you really need is someone real.
