Regularly watching videos created by artificial intelligence could have serious consequences for mental health, according to Maria Matveeva, associate professor at the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies at Novosibirsk State University. As reported by TASS, Matveeva highlights that frequent exposure to such content can foster dependency, increase social withdrawal, and contribute to depressive symptoms.
The phenomenon has become so widespread that a new term has emerged on social media: нейрослоп. This label refers to low-quality content mass-produced by AI with minimal human oversight, often designed to generate quick profits and attract large audiences. Matveeva notes that overconsumption of these videos can lead to psychological issues, including addiction, social isolation, and depression.
Beyond emotional risks, there are concerns about cognitive health. Matveeva points out that excessive viewing of AI-generated content may impair attention span and promote so-called ‘clip thinking’—a fragmented, superficial way of processing information. These effects are particularly troubling for children and teenagers, who may be more vulnerable to the influence of violent or unethical scenarios, as well as content that provokes fear or anxiety.
Sleep quality is another area of concern. Matveeva warns that watching AI-generated videos, especially before bedtime, can disrupt melatonin production and negatively impact rest. She recommends avoiding screens and AI content for at least one to two hours before sleep to help maintain healthy sleep patterns and support overall well-being.
